Gurugram (Haryana) [India], July 21: Somewhere above the Arabian Peninsula right now, there is a good chance a pilot trained in the heartland of India – Madhya Pradesh, to be precise – has their hands on the controls of a jet flying across international skies. They may be in the cockpit of an Emirates Boeing 777, a Qatar Airways Airbus A350, or an Air Arabia narrowbody threading its way across the Gulf. And there is a good chance that the pilot is a graduate of Chimes Aviation Academy (CAA), a DGCA-approved Flying Training Organisation that quietly built itself into one of India’s prominent pilot training institutions over the past 18 years.
The numbers back this up. More than 1,000 CAA alumni are currently employed across airlines including IndiGo, Air India, Air India Express, Akasa Air, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Air Arabia – a roster that spans across domestic turboprops to international widebody operations. The academy has logged over 200,000 flight hours since inception, a figure that describes not a school but a functioning training ecosystem.
The bigger question isn’t what CAA has built. It’s why the world’s most prestigious carriers keep recruiting from it.
The Global Backdrop: A Structural Pilot Shortage Fuelling Gulf Demand
To understand why Indian pilots are landing jobs at Emirates, Qatar, and Air Arabia, you need to understand the global context first.
Oliver Wyman, the global management consultancy, estimates a worldwide shortage of nearly 80,000 pilots by 2032. In the Middle East, that shortage is being felt acutely. Emirates has hundreds of aircraft on order, with Airbus A350s and new Boeing 777s arriving through the coming years, and the airline has “revved up” its pilot recruitment drive accordingly. Riyadh Air, a new entrant backed by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, wants to hire 700 pilots over the next three years alone. Etihad and Qatar Airways continue to recruit pilots as they expand their operations.
For Indian pilots, the arithmetic is compelling. Emirates first officers earn between approximately ₹6.6 lakh and ₹8 lakh per month (AED 26,000–34,000) – tax-free, with housing and travel allowances, education support, and annual leave stacked on top. Compare that with a fresh first officer at an Indian carrier earning ₹1.2–3 lakh per month in the early stages of their career, and the pull becomes obvious. As one junior first officer told a national publication, “The pay is brilliant in Gulf countries. If one gets the opportunity, they’d definitely take it.”
Better pay isn’t the only draw. Structured work hours, clearer career progression, and international prestige all factor in. The result is a talent migration that is accelerating. Indian pilots with high-quality training and English proficiency are being recruited across Asia and the Gulf, contributing to what analysts describe as a domestic talent crunch at the same time as unprecedented domestic fleet expansion.
India’s Aviation Boom – and Its Pilot Paradox
The irony of Indian pilots flying for Gulf carriers is that India has never needed its own pilots more urgently.
India is now the third-largest domestic aviation market in the world. Passenger traffic has exceeded 350 million annually, with projections to reach 715 million by 2030. The market, valued at approximately $15 billion in 2025, is forecast to grow to $25 billion by 2030 at a 15% year-on-year rate.
Indian airlines have placed some of the most ambitious aircraft orders in global aviation history – Air India has ordered 570 aircraft since 2023 and IndiGo has become the world’s biggest A320 Family customer. While new entrant Akasa Air has over 150 aircraft yet to be delivered from its initial order of 225 Boeing 737 Max aircraft. India’s commercial fleet is projected to reach 1,100 aircraft by 2027 and, per Airbus projections, nearly triple to around 2,200 planes over the next decade.
The pilot math is daunting. Parliamentary disclosures estimate a requirement of 7,000 pilots between 2024 and 2026, rising to 25,000–30,000 over the following decade. But the DGCA has issued only around 7,200 Commercial Pilot Licences (CPLs) between 2020 and 2025. India’s civil aviation minister K Rammohan Naidu stated at the launch of the Electronic Personnel License for pilots that “India will need 20,000 pilots in the coming years.” Some projections estimate that demand could rise to 30,000 pilots over the next 15–20 years as airlines induct more than 1,700 aircraft.
This is not a shortage of aspiration. It is a shortage of structured, quality training capacity that produces airline-ready graduates – that modern jet operations demand.
What Chimes Aviation Academy Actually Built
CAA did not set out to serve the Gulf. It set out to build the right kind of pilot training ecosystem, and the Gulf carriers have simply recognized the quality of pilots that ecosystem produces.
Founded in 2007 and DGCA-approved, CAA operates from airfields at Dhana and Neemuch in Madhya Pradesh, with a Ground Training School in Gurugram, Haryana. Its fleet of 33 aircraft – including Garmin G1000 glass-cockpit Cessna 172s, Tecnam P2010s, Piper Archer DX, and Diamond DA42 twin-engine aircraft – is routinely described as one of India’s youngest and most modern training fleets. Training on glass cockpits from day one is not incidental. It is a deliberate design choice that significantly eases a cadet’s transition into the modern commercial airliner cockpit.
The decision to base flying operations in Madhya Pradesh, made when most aviation investment was clustering around India’s southern and western metros, has proven strategically correct. Madhya Pradesh offers year-round flying conditions, unrestricted practice airspace, and a multi-airfield infrastructure that cross-trains cadets across different environments. Weather delays – a chronic drag on training timelines at many Indian FTOs – are minimised here. The result is that CAA cadets complete training on structured timelines, a factor that matters both to airlines placing cadet program cohorts and to aspirants calculating the return on a ₹35–95 lakh training investment.
The Madhya Pradesh government has taken notice. The MP Civil Aviation Policy 2025, announced by Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, is designed to expand air connectivity, pilot training, and private-sector participation across the state’s existing eight airports, 20 airstrips, and 220 helipads – with Ujjain and Shivpuri under development.
In 18-plus years of operations, CAA has maintained one of the lowest incident rates in the Indian FTO sector – a metric that airlines, particularly safety-obsessed Gulf carriers, take seriously.
The IndiGo Cadet Program: A Domestic Pipeline with International Proof Points
CAA operates India’s only homegrown IndiGo Cadet Pilot Program – an association that takes a cadet from zero flying experience to a Commercial Pilot Licence with type rating in 20 months, with graduates, known as Chimes Aviators, entering IndiGo operations directly as junior first officers.
This program has broader industry implications . The existence of a structured approach to pilot training, combining rigorous selection with a defined pathway to airline operations – has produced graduates with qualities that are increasingly valued by recruiters across the aviation industry.
When a Gulf airlines recruiter sees a Chimes Aviator with clean DGCA documentation, glass cockpit hours, multi-engine instrument rating, and a proven track record of airline-standard – discipline, they see someone who requires less additional investment to put in a right-hand seat. That is what Gulf airlines are paying for – not just hours, but airline-readiness.
The Chimes Aviator Profile: Why Gulf Carriers Are Interested
Several factors make Chimes graduates attractive to international carriers specifically, not just domestic ones.
Glass-cockpit training from day one. The G1000 avionics suite used in CAA’s fleet mirrors the navigation and avionics philosophy of modern commercial jets. Pilots who have trained on glass panels adapt faster during type rating and sim assessment – a measurable advantage at airline selection.
Multi-airfield cross-training. Operating from Dhana and Neemuch gives cadets exposure to different airfield environments, taxiway configurations, and operational procedures. This breadth is unusual in Indian FTO training and correlates with stronger situational awareness scores during airline simulator checks.
Safety culture and low incident rates. CAA’s 18-year safety record in a sector where DGCA has documented ongoing concerns about other FTOs speaks directly to the kind of culture embedded during training. Gulf carriers have zero tolerance for safety shortcuts – and they can research an FTO’s history.
Strong English proficiency. ICAO-standard English language proficiency is non-negotiable for international operations. CAA’s urban ground school in Gurugram and its structured theoretical training produces graduates with the language competency Gulf operators need for multi-national cockpit environments.
Alumni network effects. With Chimes Aviators already flying for Emirates, Qatar, and Air Arabia, there is a self-reinforcing referral dynamic. Experienced pilots recommend their training institutions. Recruiters return to talent pools that have delivered. The brand recognition that CAA has built inside airline HR departments is a consequence of consistent graduate quality over years, not a marketing exercise.
The Bigger Question India Should Be Asking
The success of CAA graduates at Gulf carriers is a genuine achievement – for the academy, and for those individual pilots whose careers have taken them from an airstrip in Madhya Pradesh to a widebody cockpit over the Gulf. But it surfaces a policy tension that Indian aviation needs to address directly.
India is, in effect, training pilots for the world. The DGCA issues roughly 1200-1600 new CPLs per year against a domestic demand that industry experts say requires 1,700–1,800 new pilots annually just to service ordered aircraft. Flying Training Organisations have also lost 40–50% of experienced instructors to the airlines – a double constraint on the supply pipeline. Meanwhile, Indian carriers have relied on around 236 temporary Foreign Aircrew Temporary Authorisation (FATA) licences in 2025 to fill cockpit seats with expat pilots at premiums over domestic rates.
The structural question is not whether Indian pilots should pursue Gulf careers – that is an individual’s choice, and the financial logic is sound. The question is whether India’s pilot training infrastructure can scale fast enough to serve both the domestic expansion and the international demand that quality training generates.
Madhya Pradesh to the Middle East
Eighteen years ago, Chimes Aviation Academy set up airfields in a part of India that most aviation investors ignored. The geography was deliberate – clear skies, unrestricted airspace, minimal weather disruption – and the training philosophy that emerged from it was equally deliberate: produce pilots who are airline-ready before they walk into a selection centre, not pilots who merely hold a licence.
The result is over 1,000 working commercial pilots. Many fly for IndiGo and others have their hands on the throttles of Airbus and Boeing jets over the Arabian Sea, in the employ of the world’s most demanding international carriers.
India trained them. The Gulf hired them. And the question now is whether India can build enough of this kind of training capacity to keep pace with its own extraordinary aviation ambition.
