Gali Arundar Sai, Founder & CEO, HostMyGuest

Hyderabad (Telangana) [India], July 29: There’s a particular kind of quiet that comes with building something that doesn’t have a name yet.

Not the quiet of failure. Not the quiet of an idea that isn’t working. It’s the quiet of standing in a room full of people you’re trying to help and realizing that even the language to describe what you’re offering them doesn’t exist. You can’t pitch it in one line, because the one line hasn’t been invented. You can’t point to a competitor and say, “like them, but better,” because there isn’t one. Every conversation starts from zero.

Most founders don’t talk about this part. The startup narrative we’re handed is one of disruption – you walk into an existing category, you find the incumbent’s weak spot, and you take share. That story has a villain, a market, and a scoreboard. It’s legible. Investors understand it. Customers understand it. Even your own team understands it, because everyone already has a mental shelf to put you on.

But some problems don’t live on an existing shelf. And building the shelf yourself, before you can even put the product on it, is a different and much lonelier kind of work.

The problem that was hiding in plain sight

At HostMyGuest, this is the exact spot we found ourselves in.

Hosting in India still runs on emotion as much as logistics. A wedding, a puja, a housewarming brings visiting relatives who need somewhere to stay for a few days. The instinct is to have them stay at the house – extra cots, extra mattresses, extra seating arranged for the duration of the event. But without a reliable way to arrange that on short notice, the logical fallback has simply been a hotel booking or an Airbnb nearby.

That’s not because families want their relatives further away. It’s because arranging the beds, mattresses, and seating for a short, specific window – a wedding week, three days of a puja – is genuinely hard to do on short notice, and there’s no established vendor to call for it. Furniture rental shops exist, but they’re built for offices and long-term leases, not a five-day requirement. Event planners exist, but they’re priced and structured for the event itself, not for solving a household’s sleeping-arrangement problem. So when a family needs eight cots, twelve mattresses, and twenty chairs for a specific week, the easiest option is just booking a couple of hotel rooms nearby.

That gap sat there for years. Not because no one noticed it, but because no one had built anything to close it. There was no one solving the actual problem: a host who wants their family staying at the house for a wedding week, and needs cots, mattresses, and chairs delivered reliably for exactly that window – so that hosting at home is a realistic option again, not just the harder one.

We built HostMyGuest to sit exactly in that gap: a day-wise rental service for cots, mattresses, and furniture for weddings, pujas, and family events, built to make hosting at home easy enough that people choose it again instead of defaulting to a hotel. Simple to describe once you say it out loud. Genuinely difficult to name before that.

What it feels like when there’s no shelf to stand on

When we started talking to hosts about this, we noticed something. People didn’t ask “how are you different from X” – because there wasn’t an X. What we got instead was a gentler, more revealing question: “Why not just put them in a hotel nearby, isn’t that easier?” And we’d have to explain – no, that’s exactly the thing we’re trying to fix. Hosting at home isn’t impossible, it’s just that no one had made it easy, so a hotel became the default answer to a problem that used to have a much warmer solution. We weren’t competing with a furniture rental shop or an event planner. We were quietly competing with a hotel booking, and with the habit of assuming that’s just how it’s done now.

That explanation, every single time, is the tax you pay for building something unnamed. There’s no shorthand. You can’t point to an existing category and say “like them, but for hosting” – because the alternative people had normalized wasn’t a competitor, it was a workaround. Every customer conversation is a small act of reminding someone what hosting used to feel like, before it can become a sales conversation. Every team meeting has to re-litigate what “good” looks like, because there’s no established benchmark to measure against – only a memory of how things used to be done. It is, frankly, exhausting in a way that building inside a known category simply isn’t.

And there’s a specific loneliness to it beyond the operational tax. It’s the loneliness of not being able to point to a well-worn analogy and relax into it. It’s watching people you respect reach for “so it’s like a hotel, but at home?” and knowing that flattening isn’t their failure to understand – it’s a real gap in the language, one you’re the one responsible for closing.

Why you do it anyway

The honest answer is that the category not existing is usually the whole reason the opportunity exists.

If “home-hosting rental for family events” were already a well-understood category with defined players and settled expectations, it would already be commoditized, and there’d be little room left to build something meaningfully better. The absence of a name is often just the absence of anyone having taken the problem seriously enough, for long enough, to solve it properly – in this case, the problem of why an entire generation quietly stopped hosting relatives under their own roof, and started hosting them at the hotel down the road instead. Founders who wait for the category to be legible before entering it are, by definition, arriving after someone else already did the naming – and usually already took the customers with it.

The families who called us during our Hyderabad launch weren’t looking for a new category. They wanted cots that would actually show up, mattresses that were actually clean, and their relatives sleeping under their own roof again instead of checking into a hotel three streets away. They wanted to be present at their own function instead of managing vendors from the kitchen. The category, if it forms at all, forms as a byproduct of taking that problem seriously – not the other way around.

What actually gets you through it

A few things have made the unnamed-category stretch survivable, if not always comfortable:

Anchor to the outcome, not the label. We stopped trying to find the perfect one-line category description and started leading with the outcome instead: a family staying together under one roof again, a host who gets to be present with her relatives instead of managing logistics or apologizing for putting them up in a hotel. People understand outcomes instantly, even when they can’t yet place the category. The name can come later. The relief on someone’s face when their cots arrive on time, clean, and exactly as ordered – that doesn’t need translating.

Let the customer name it for you. Some of the clearest language we’ve used to describe HostMyGuest didn’t come from a pitch deck – it came from a host who told us this was the first wedding in years where her whole family had actually stayed at her house, instead of scattering across two hotels nearby. Customers are often better at naming a category than founders are, because they’re not trying to sound investable. They’re just describing relief.

Expect the tax, budget for it. Every unnamed category adds friction to every single conversation – sales, hiring, fundraising, press. Knowing that going in means you don’t mistake it for a sign the idea is wrong. It’s a sign the idea is early.

Find the others doing the same thing, even in different categories. The specific loneliness of an unnamed category is eased, oddly, by other founders who are equally unnamed in their own space. You won’t share a competitor, but you’ll share the experience of explaining yourself from scratch every day, and that’s its own kind of company.

The category comes later – if it comes at all

We don’t know yet whether “on-demand home-hosting furniture” or whatever it eventually gets called will become a recognized category with its own shelf, the way food delivery or ride-hailing did. That’s not really up to us. Categories get named in hindsight, usually by journalists, analysts, or the market itself, once enough people have solved the same problem in similar enough ways that a pattern becomes visible.

What is up to us is doing the work properly while the category is still unnamed – building the reliability, the hygiene standard, the two-step booking, the same-day delivery, the small operational disciplines that make a family choose to host their in-laws at home again, instead of two streets away in a hotel, during the one week a year that matters most to them. If we do that well enough, for long enough, the name will show up on its own. Somebody else will probably be the one to write it down.

Until then, loneliness is just part of the job. Not a warning sign. Just the weather you build in, before the category has a forecast at all.
