Ayurveda expert Dr. Harish Verma highlights research findings; urges patients not to discontinue thyroid medication without medical advice
New Delhi [India], August 17: A clinical study evaluating the Ayurvedic therapy Shirodhara, particularly Takradhara, has reported a statistically significant reduction in elevated Thyroid-Stimulating Hormone (TSH) levels among patients with subclinical hypothyroidism, drawing attention to the potential role of traditional Ayurvedic therapies as supportive approaches in thyroid care.
Ayurveda expert Dr. Harish Verma said hypothyroidism occurs when the thyroid gland does not produce sufficient thyroid hormones to meet the body’s requirements, which may result in a slowing of several metabolic and physiological functions.
Common symptoms may include persistent fatigue and weakness, unexplained weight gain, swelling of the face, hands or feet, constipation, dry skin, hair loss, poor memory, difficulty concentrating, low mood, irritability, and muscle or joint pain. Women may experience menstrual irregularities, difficulty conceiving and an increased risk of recurrent miscarriage. In men, reduced sexual function, erectile dysfunction and impaired sperm quality may affect fertility. Children may show delayed physical growth, inadequate height gain and difficulty concentrating.
Dr. Verma stressed the importance of timely diagnosis through thyroid-function tests, including TSH, Free T3 and Free T4. In subclinical hypothyroidism, TSH is elevated while Free T3 and Free T4 may remain within the normal range.
The clinical study involved 30 patients aged 20 to 50 years with elevated TSH levels and normal Free T3 and Free T4 values. Participants received Takradhara for approximately 45 minutes daily for seven consecutive days, followed by assessments at 30, 60 and 90 days after treatment.
The paper also suggested that Shirodhara may promote physical and mental relaxation and may help reduce stress and anxiety. According to the researchers, such effects could potentially influence neuroendocrine functions, although the proposed mechanisms require further scientific investigation.
