Gurugram (Haryana) [India], September 30: Every few years, a category of enterprise software goes through a familiar cycle: capital arrives, new products compete for attention, and enterprise buyers begin separating compelling demonstrations from technology that can become part of their everyday operations. Indian legaltech is experiencing its own period of heightened interest, driven in large part by the possibilities created by artificial intelligence.
The harder question, and the one that funding announcements rarely answer, is how many of these platforms are actually built to survive contact with a real legal department.
That distinction matters in legal operations because impressive AI capabilities are only one part of the buying decision. A legal team reviewing an AI-drafted contract clause may want to know where the recommendation came from, whether it reflects internal standards, what information was considered and whether the output can be reviewed before action is taken. If a platform cannot answer those questions, confidence in the system can disappear quickly.
Many legal AI products have emerged around specific capabilities: drafting contracts, summarising case files, assisting with research or extracting information from large volumes of legal material. These can deliver meaningful productivity gains. But a legal department managing large volumes of live contracts, active disputes and ongoing compliance obligations is rarely evaluating a feature in isolation. It is evaluating whether the technology can sit inside its actual workflow, connect relevant information, flag departures from internal standards and maintain appropriate visibility and oversight without creating another layer of manual reconciliation.
For Legistify, the Gurugram-based AI-first enterprise legal operations platform, this distinction has shaped the way its technology has evolved. Rather than addressing legal tasks entirely in isolation, the company has brought Contract Lifecycle Management, Litigation Management, IP Management and Legal Notice Management into a connected four-module structure through its LegisTrak platform.
Its AI-powered workspace, Codex, operates across these modules rather than existing solely as a standalone drafting or research interface. The direction reflects a larger challenge for enterprise legal AI: moving from answering an individual question or analysing a single document to working with the wider context in which legal decisions are made.
That gap between a tool that performs well in a demonstration and one that holds up inside an actual legal department is where enterprise adoption is ultimately tested. A single capability may be enough to win a proof of concept. Renewal, expansion and wider deployment demand something harder to demonstrate in a sales call: whether the technology can remain useful as it encounters changing data, multiple stakeholders, approval structures, internal policies and the need for human oversight.
This becomes particularly important as AI moves from document-level assistance towards portfolio-level legal operations. Legistify’s Codex Connectors, for instance, are designed to work across live legal data and help teams examine information spanning multiple matters. The objective is to make AI useful not only for generating an answer, but also for identifying risks, surfacing deadlines, analysing workloads and creating summaries across a broader legal portfolio while keeping outputs available for review.
Pratik Mohapatra, Legistify’s Co-founder and Chief Business Officer, brings an operational perspective to that challenge. A lawyer by education, Mohapatra spent years managing legal operations for large companies before joining Legistify, giving him direct exposure to the problems enterprise legal teams encounter in their day-to-day workflows.
From that perspective, the more consequential question is not simply what an AI system can generate, but what an enterprise can trust it not to miss. That distinction matters far more once AI moves beyond producing a first draft and begins interacting with substantive contract, litigation and risk-management workflows.
India’s legal departments are also dealing with growing volumes of contracts, disputes, regulatory requirements and business obligations, often without legal teams expanding at the same pace. Technology can help close that operational gap, but adding another disconnected application does not necessarily reduce complexity. The enterprise value of legal AI therefore depends not only on the sophistication of an individual feature, but also on how effectively it fits into the wider legal environment.
This is where enterprise adoption provides a different measure from technological novelty. Legistify has now crossed more than 350 enterprise clients across sectors including e-commerce, FMCG, hospitality, manufacturing and retail. Deployments across such different industries also mean operating within substantially different legal processes, risk profiles and organisational structures.
None of this is an argument against the current wave of investment and experimentation in legal AI. Contract drafting, document summarisation, legal research and information extraction can each solve meaningful problems. The harder test comes later, when enterprises decide whether those capabilities have become dependable enough to remain embedded in their workflows.
The difference between an impressive demonstration and a durable enterprise product may therefore become clearest during renewal and expansion decisions. At that stage, legal teams are evaluating more than whether the technology works. They are deciding whether it understands enough context, provides sufficient visibility and oversight, and reduces rather than redistributes the manual work involved.
For legal AI, that may ultimately be the test that matters most. The platforms that remain inside an enterprise legal department will need to do more than generate fast answers. They will need to understand where those answers fit, what they affect and when a human still needs to make the final call.
