New Delhi [India], October 12: Once upon a time, a Diwali evening didn’t require much planning at all. Sweets, savouries, guests calling on the off-chance and before you knew it, someone would produce a pack of cards. The living room would slowly transform itself into the game room, and that’s where Tambola, Teen Patti, Antakshari and Housie would take place till very late at night. The games were never what mattered. It was the being together.
As celebrations have shifted from feast-filled family gatherings to thoughtfully curated dinners, house parties and small socials with friends and co-workers, that spirit of the holiday is taking new shapes. The games have changed as well. While classic games remain popular, a new generation of hosts is introducing poker, strategy games, modern board games and even curated game-night experiences; it’s less about winners, and more about ensuring everyone at the table has something to do.
From the neighborhood Housie game to the curated game night
Diwali games have been unorganised for several generations. One person would call out, “Tambola game!” while another would deliver a pack of cards, and before you know it, people are involved. The contemporary Diwali gathering, though, is more and more tailored to create experiences.

Living rooms are now entertainment rooms and the host is mindful of every detail, from the playlist and table decor to the presentation of the food and the activities that will entertain the guests. And in this environment, games have been given something of an interesting second life. The classic card game can be transformed into the more curated game night, where the game itself becomes part of the aesthetics and entertainment for the evening. Whether it is an artfully arranged deck of cards, or a board game or poker set, it complements the candles, the decor and the dinner table rather than competing with it.
Why adults are rediscovering games
Maybe the most captivating aspect of this move has been how games are no longer thought of as a “children’s activity” or confined to a family setting. For the busy professional or city-dwelling younger crowd, a game night is one of the rare opportunities to have an alibi to leave the device behind and engage.
The thing is, in our always-online world, some face-to-face entertainment actually sounds quite inviting. A bunch of people gathered around a table, arguing over the rules, sharing a laugh when someone makes a surprising move or just plain ribbing the person who takes the game too seriously, can provide the kind of informal engagement that a deliberate dinner sometimes cannot. Now is the time for Diwali, when calendars are often packed with two or three parties in quick succession, and, more often than not, what people remember about the gatherings is less about the decor and more about what actually took place there.
Perhaps a story was swapped, the game played just a little bit longer than intended or everyone just stayed for “one more round.”
Welcome to the Diwali Living Room of Poker
Poker is a particularly good fit for this age of casualness, since it is comfortable and elegant at once. Poker’s visual lexicon, meanwhile, has taken on over the past few decades a new connection to high-end entertainment: chips, cards, a case, a table, and the gathering of friends around it, adding a touch of theatre to an otherwise boring night. But it is not about turning your lounge into a casino; this thing has to remain relaxed: some friends, some food, a little music, and a game that provides conversation fuel for everyone.
Premium poker sets are therefore beginning to carve out an intriguing position as a new and novel gift to entertain, particularly for a gifting occasion. For example: Noida’s famous and most loved Consortium Gifts 300-piece Poker Chip Set, which is housed in a conveniently structured black polycarbonate case with poker chips of various denominations, alongside playing cards and accessories. This is not only a present by itself, but also lends itself as the foundation for an evening of play, a hosted night of gambling and entertainment, and it can be used long after the holiday season is over.
Perhaps that is ultimately the strength of experience as a gift in these times. A more traditional gift might be used once and then discarded, where a live and time-based experience can create memories.
The new Diwali tradition: play post-dinner
Some have noted a sense of timing to the games. Historically, Diwali entertainment was more food-centric: dinner, mithai, snacks and drinks. Today, however, modern day hosting is as much about creating a second act to the night, as it is about the first one. Dinner is over. The music is still playing. The dessert arrives. And then somebody asks, “Shall we play something?” That is the beginning of the modern game night. It could be a card game between old friends, a board game with cousins, a strategy game with colleagues or poker night with a few friends. The structure doesn’t matter so much, but you’re aiming for an activity that will keep everyone at the table.
For hosts, it is also a surprisingly convenient solution to a surprisingly common party problem, what to do after everyone has eaten.
A well-thought-out game turns into an icebreaker for acquaintances and an immediate topic of conversation for people who already know each other. It makes an intimate affair more lively without the need for expensive entertainment.
From gifting a thing to gifting a thrill
What’s this change all about? Well, one is the shift we are seeing among people towards Diwali gifting which is increasingly leaning towards items that are functional, personalised and experiential. The question of ‘What will look good in a gift box?’ is giving way to ‘What will they actually do with it?’ A game set is an especially attractive option in this situation as it is, at once, a gift and an invitation. An invitation to entertain, a reason to gather and a way to enjoy each other’s company. The second part of this statement is especially interesting to corporate gifting, as organisations look beyond the more traditional festive hampers.
What they want now are offerings that can move seamlessly from the work environment into the home and facilitate socialising. What would make a fantastic family occasion gift, a weekend spent with friends or a regular feature of the recipient’s hosting rota?
A quality game set.
Adult game night is going nowhere
Maybe the bigger Diwali game makeover isn’t about substituting Tambola with poker or Housie with board games but about redefining what a celebration can be like. There’s room for the loud tambola caller, the competitive teen patti table, family antakshari, for the cousin who needs to change the game halfway but what is great about the traditional celebration is also that there’s room for all that and for something newer, curated and experiential. After all, the core has always been about uniting people, from a group of roadies going door-to-door with the old neighbourhood Housie board to a star-studded table with curated music and Instagram-worthy decor – the one thing that remains is that yes, people are having a good time, sitting around a table, talking, joking, competing, and creating memories that last longer than the diya’s flame. Maybe, that’s the Diwali game’s real grown-up upgrade , not playing differently, but just playing in different ways.
