The Ghaziabad-based company now sells seven single-flower honeys through its website, from ajwain to Kashmir acacia
New Delhi [India], October 29: Ask someone in India what honey they have at home and the answer is usually “just honey.” Rarely a flower, rarely a place. HUNIWA Honey would like that to change, and it’s going about it quietly, jar by jar.
The company is run by Huniwa Foods India, out of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh. It sells straight from its own website, with no middlemen in the shop aisle. As an Indian honey brand it’s still young, and its idea is easy to explain. Collect honey that’s linked to one flower or forest. Say so on the label and on the page. Let people choose. Seven honeys are on offer right now, and no two taste the same.
Why the flower matters
Bees make honey from whatever is in bloom, so the flower shapes everything: colour, smell, thickness, even how long the jar stays runny. Bees on ajwain blossoms make something very different from bees on acacia. Most shelf honey blends all that together, which works fine for sweetening chai but tells you nothing about what you’re eating.
HUNIWA names each honey after its source and gives it a page of its own. If you’re new to this, you can see roughly what to expect before you click order. If you’ve been buying for years, you can try something different.
Ajwain, acacia and eucalyptus
Start with Ajwain honey, because it catches people off guard. It comes from ajwain flowers and tastes herbal and strong. It isn’t the soft, sugary honey most of us grew up with. Many customers stir a spoonful into warm water in the morning, and it shows up in plenty of home remedies. Some people don’t take to it. The ones who do, tend to keep buying.
Acacia honey is the opposite. HUNIWA’s Kashmir Acacia Honey is collected from acacia flowers in the Kashmir valley. It’s pale, mild, and stays liquid for a long time, so it pours easily. If strong honeys put you off, this is probably where to begin.
Eucalyptus honey falls somewhere in between, though closer to bold. It has a strong smell and a pronounced taste, and it holds its own in hot drinks and cooking, where milder honeys get lost.
The forest one
Then there’s the wild forest honey. HUNIWA’s Himalayan Forest Honey is gathered from many wild flowers, not from a single crop. What’s blooming in one month isn’t blooming in the next, so the flavour moves with the seasons. A jar from this batch may not match the last one. Some buyers love that. Others want the same taste every time, and for them one of the single-flower honeys is the better pick.
The remaining three round out the range. HUNIWA Sunflower Honey is a plain, floral honey for everyday use. Pure Sidr Honey comes from jujube flowers, a tree many Indian homes know as ber. Sulai Flora Honey is from Sulai tree flowers in forest areas, and like the wild forest honey, it changes with the season.
Buying honey online
Honestly, buying food on the internet still makes plenty of people uneasy, and honey might be the worst case. You can’t open it. You can’t smell it. You can’t flip the jar and read the back. Someone searching for natural honey online is really looking for answers. Where’s it from? What does it taste like? Who do I ring if something goes wrong?
The HUNIWA site tries to deal with that early. Each product page describes the flower source and flavour. The whole collection is in one place, so comparing is easy. There’s also an FAQ, which covers the questions new buyers tend to ask. Honey can change colour or turn grainy over time, for instance. That’s crystallisation, and it’s natural. It doesn’t need a fridge either, just a dry shelf away from direct sun. A support email and phone number are listed on the site too.
Read the label anyway, as you would with any packaged food. Ingredients, storage advice and suitability vary between products, and that matters more if you have dietary restrictions.
Beyond the tea cup
Tea gets most of the honey, I’d guess. But it works in a lot of places. Salad dressings. Marinades. Over yoghurt or porridge. In baking, instead of sugar. A few people mix it into face packs and hair masks at home. Having two or three varieties in the cupboard helps: something bold for a hot drink, something lighter for toast.
Where the brand is headed
HUNIWA isn’t promising to change the honey industry. The plan is smaller and more realistic. Help customers find a honey they like, tell them where it came from, and make ordering simple. If someone starts with the gentle acacia and a few months later is reaching for the ajwain, the brand will take that as a win.
